A tapa is a small Spanish appetizer or snack, served with drinks, often consisting of a tiny portion of food like olives, ham, cheese, or fried squid, that can be combined to form a full meal and reflect Spain’s social dining culture.
Originating from the practice of covering drinks with bread or ham to keep out dust and flies (the word “tapa” means “lid” in Spanish), tapas have evolved into elaborate dishes but remain a fun, communal way to enjoy diverse Spanish flavors by bar-hopping and sampling many small plates.
