Karaoke: Golf del Sur and surrounds
Most bars offering karaoke around the Golf tend to be more of a family atmosphere than the loud somewhat alcohol driven party atmosphere in Costa Adeje and Las Americas.
Children are usually welcome and food is often available.
You need a license to fish off the shore or harbour walls. The Canary Islands fishing license is valid for 3 years and you can order it online.
Its mainly little fish but grab your rods, sandwiches and drinks and wile away a few hours. You might catch dinner. The harbour outer walls are made up of big boulders, which can be a hassle if you catch your line in between them.
Rockfish hiding in the reefs and rocky bottoms are numerous,Ā joined by many other colorful creatures, such as Wrasse, Pufferfish, Damselfish, Seabream. While these fish may not grow to impressive sizes, they are fun to target and provide fishing fun for the whole family.
Ornate Wrasse
The Ornate Wrasse is one of the Tenerife fish that are relatively easy to catch. You will find them living in various sized groups around rock marks, harbour walls and even in rock pools. These Wrasses are not fussy eaters and you can catch them float fishing with baits such as bread, prawn, mussel, squid and even strips of ham. You can also catch these fish on artificial baits. Small 2ā lures such as the grass minnow and some worm rigged on a small size 10 jig head will take fish. With them living in groups, if you catch one you should catch plenty more. They grow to around 20cm in length and will fight hard on light tackle.
Madeira Rockfish
The first thing that I will say about this Tenerife fish, is to be very careful when you handle them. They have a sharp, spiky dorsal fin which is very venomous. They can be found in shallow water, living amongst rocks and boulders. The fish are ambush predators which stay hidden away until a food source passes. The clever fish will shoot out from their rocky lair, ambush the food item and return to their home. Bait fishing will catch the odd fish, but generally, you need to use small 2ā lures and work them amongst the rocks and boulders to catch them.
Blenny Fish
Blennies and Gobies: We have put these two fish together as one because these Tenerife fish live in the same type of area and consume the same sorts of food. They will inhabit very shallow water and live amongst any structure such as rocks and weed that makes them feel safe. By far the best place to catch these though is in the many large rock pools that can be found in the area. Use small hooks around the size 10 mark and using small pieces of bait such as squid, prawn, mussel and bread will enable you to catch these fish. As well as bait, try small lures around the 1.5ā-2ā mark. These are very common Tenerife fish that are easy to catch and a large rock pool will hold numerous fish.
Pufferfish
These are quite common around the Canary Islands and can often be seen in the clear water swimming around. Catching them is relatively straight forward. You will need really small hooks, sizes around the 12-14 mark is ideal. Small bits of bait such as squid, mussel, cockle and prawn will work as will small pieces of bread. Float fishing for them is the best method, although small lures can be used. The best place to catch these is around the rocks or from the beach.
Damsel Fish
Another common type of Tenerife fish is the Blue Finned Damsel. These can often be seen swimming in small groups around rock pools, close to rocks and around the outer walls of marinas. Similar to the pufferfish, they have very small mouths so baits and hooks need to be small. Size 10-14 hooks with tiny pieces of squid, prawn or mussel will work, but the easiest and most commonly available bait is bread. These fish arenāt really predatory, so lures arenāt worth using.
Mullet
Mullet can be seen swimming in large shoals in sheltered water around the marinas, beaches and large rock pools. These are by far the trickiest Tenerife fish to catch. Use tiny hooks and fine line to try and catch these wary fish. Introduce lots of bread in the water and get the shoal feeding before trying to catch one. Small hooks around the size 10 mark with a tiny piece of bread on is by far the best method, although free lining will work. You donāt want any weight near the hook, you need your bait to sink naturally. They have soft moves, so donāt strike too hard.
Barracuda
The barracuda is an out and out predator with its diet consisting of predominantly other fish. Although these fish can grow to 20lbs plus in weight, lots of smaller juveniles can be caught from the beach and rock marks. Although using live bait will work, by far the best method to catch this Tenerife fish is to use lures. Hard lures such as crank-baits, poppers, spinners and spoons are by far the best types to use. You must remember though to use a fine wire trace as the sharp teeth of the barracuda will make the short work of a normal fishing line.
Lizardfish
Another Tenerife fish that takes a liking to the various hard lures are lizardfish. Similar to the barracuda, these fish are an out and out predator that consume other fish. They lie buried in the sand with just their eyes poking out and wait for any small fish to pass by. They then shoot upwards, grab their prey and return to the bottom.
Recreational fishing is a regulated activity and can be of various types:
Recreational Fishing Licences
A fishing licence is compulsory for recreational fishing. Recreational fishing licences issued in other Spanish autonomous communities are also valid in the Canary Islands.
There are three types of recreational fishing licence:
Processing of Recreational Fishing Permits
All fishing licences can be applied for either in person or online. These licences become active immediately and are valid for three years. They must always be carried with you when you go fishing. Ā read more:
If you decide to fish in Tenerife from the shore, there is a vast variety of fish that you can catch, either by using bait or lures. Large fish can be caught from the beach and rock marks, but in general, it will be the smaller species that you encounter. We will now take a look at the more common species of Tenerife fish that you are likely to catch when fishing from the shore.
Catching Fish from the Shore – “Can I eat it?”
Some small species, yes, but we are talking about those that do not exceed 3 or 4 kilos in weight.
Recreational fishing is a regulated activity and can be of various types:
A fishing licence is compulsory for recreational fishing.
What fish are in local Tenerife?
The waters just off Tenerife’s coasts are deep and have the influence of the Gulf Currents, making them the ideal habitat for parrot fish, sardines, samas, wreckfish, pollocks, grouper fish, combers, horse-mackerel, cuttle fish and mackerel, to name just a few.
Flatfish in Tenerife
Flatfish can camouflage themselves by imitating the color of the sea floor. They become sand-colored on sandy bottoms and patchy stone-colored on pebbly bottoms. You can hardly see them anymore. Flatfish begin their lives as normal swimming fish but get a flattened body within a couple of weeks. They are totally adapted to living on the sea floor. Even their eyes move to one side of their head. If you were to weigh all the fish in the North Sea, one third of the total would be flatfish.
Tenerife FishĀ Ā Shore Fishing
Tenerife Carp Fishing Experience Ā Take a tip up the mountains in San Miguel for a relaxing half day carp fishing. There are many reservoirs up in the mountains, heavily stocked with fish, including, common carp, mirror carp, grass carp and freshwater bass. Sizes range from around a pound to over 30.Ā Ā You can be picked up outside your boat, hotel or Tenerife apartment, taken to the reservoir and everything will be provided for you, including tackle and bait.
The carp fishing option is not available at the moment. Keen anglers have been waiting for some time for the new owners to make a decision as to whether they will continue with fishing.
That basically leaves you with 3 options: Fishing for fun, shore or boat or the more extreme sport fishing for those who are physically ableĀ – and very little in between.
Keen anglers will no doubt enjoy the Sports Fishing trips, going for the really big fish while novices to fishing will enjoy the boat trips offering fishing, but to be honest, these are little more than dangling a rod in the water and hoping for the best. There are many options for fishing from the dock or harbourĀ – remember you need a licence for this type of fishing – it’s relaxing and in the right places, with the right bait, it’s fairly easy to catch fish.
Shore Fishing
For theĀ experience angler who doesn’t want to go for sport fishing, there is very little fishing offered in Tenerife.
Sadly The Carp Pit has closed and the consensus of local anglers is that Gran Canaria is a better choice.

Tenerife South is more popular than the north among ex-pats looking for a place to buy or rent, mainly due to its sunny weather. The south of the island is also visited by many tourists in the summer months, which can make it somewhat chaotic but also fun and quite lively.
In general both property prices and rental accommodation are cheaper in the north than the south, and cheaper again inland and away from the tourist areas.
‘Best place’ is a very subjective term. It depends on what lifestyle you want.
Los Abrigos is quiet and only a little touristy with an English and Italian ex-pat community, El Medano has a similar feel but is typically Spanish speaking, as is Las Galletas.
Puerto de la Cruz is in the North, is greener, and has a lively tourist and ex-pat vibe.
Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos are all expensive and very touristy.
Other areas, less popular are: Playa La Arena, Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago.

Las Vistas is a beach very close to Los Cristianos Beach, only about 150 meters separate them and you can walk from one to the other along the promenade.
Las Vistas Dive Site, protected from currents and with a sandy bottom,Ā is the ideal place for baptisms, refreshers and night dives. Max depth is 12m.
Convenient access, the dive is at the foot of the breakwater located on the left of the Las Vistas beach. A very easy dive with varied fauna which continues to surprise both for it’s colour and variety of fish.
Beginners will usually feel more comfortable using dive sites that can be accessed from the beach. If you are on holiday with friends and family with non-divers, beach dives works best.
For more information on the best places to dive, go to Granadilla Diving.
Nocturnal Las Vistas Dive. Just phenomenal š
There is an excellent in-depth article on non-swimmers diving at Abyss Scuba.
I don’t totally agree with one or two things and here’s why.
As an ex-water phobic, I learned to swim at age 52. I was so bad I would often panic in the shower.Ā I did conquer my fear and go on to qualify as an instructor and lifeguard, then take my PADI diving qualifications.
So my first point is that trying to dive when you still have that fear leaves you open to making matters far worse. For the record, after many failed attempts, I learned to swim with Total Immersion.
If you really want to go ahead, an understanding fully qualified diving instructor on a one to one basis is the way to go.
Medical issues like breathing you will be told ‘no way’, especially if you can’t swim. That said, I proved to my asthma consultant that I was determined, and promised to dive one to one with a qualified instructor, and he signed the certificate.
Another sticking point is well muscled men, especially body builders, and for that matter female body builders as well.
It’s imperative that you learn to overcome this by buoyancy techniques such as Total Immersion teaches.Ā Because water is 1000 times denser than air, water resistance (drag) is the largest factor limiting how far or fast we swim. Fish and aquatic mammals are naturally streamlined. For human swimmers itās a learned skill.
If you think you can’t learn to swim then let me assure you that you can. I have taught many many non-swimmers and water phobics with not one single failure.
To gain a PADI qualification, there is a minimum distance you are required to swim. That aside, you will get a lot more out of your diving sessions if you feel fully comfortable in the water.
PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD)
We offer try diving programs for non-certified divers. You will be under our guidance and follow the highest of safety standards.
The difference between these experience programs and a PADI Diving Course is that, after completion, you do not receive a diving license, but you can repeat the programs as many times you want, and will always be accompanied by a PADI Professional.
Abades, locally called Los Abriguitos, in the town of PorĆs de Abona, in Arico.
Abades is arguably the best dive site for all diving levels with a max depth of 16 meter. This dive site is very versatile, being suitable for beginners, snorkellers and advanced divers alike. The site is abundant with aquatic life such as breams, wrasse, razorfish, cuttlefish, starfish, and cleaner shrimp. If you are looking for peace this beach is the ideal place to spend a quiet day.
Beginners will usually feel more comfortable using dive sites that can be accessed from the beach. If you are on holiday with friends and family with non-divers, beach dives work best.

Tabaiba is a dive site with a huge rock formation along the coast. The site is popular for diving and snorkelling, and it also has an underwater cave.
More advanced divers will enjoy this wreck dive as the wreck sits between 20m down to 32m. An artificial reef, it’s an incredible example of how the aquatic eco-system can be protected by human intervention. Since it sank, off El Penon, the diversity at this wreck has increased immensely.
Beginners will usually feel more comfortable using dive sites that can be accessed from the beach. If you are on holiday with friends and family with non-divers, beach dives work best.

Most of the dive sites in Tenerife are a mixture of unusual lava forms forming rock labyrinths and a wealth of Atlantic flora and fauna. Among these places stand out, among others, the Underwater Nature Reserve of Montana Amarilla, Las Eras and Abades and El Balito.
In Arico, one of our favourite dive sites, Las Eras. Las Eras is a small, quiet village on the south coast of Tenerife.
This dive site give us plenty of entertainment with swim-throughs, overhangs and the light entering from the cracks in the rock makes it even more beautiful .

Freebird Sailing was founded in 1994, specialising in cruises aboard a 30-seater catamaran. Now the largest catamaran service in the Canary Islands, offering trips on 3 catamarans.
But are they the best choice for your catamaran trip?
First you should thoroughly check prices, food options and the number of people onboard. Freebird has a good reputation with 4 stars out of 5. There are others with 5 out of 5 so look at the small niggles on Freebirds reviews.
The most common irritation seems to be value for money especially with food.
- We were told that the trip catered for vegetarians which was a complete lie. The only dish served was meatballs and rice, with the veggie option being just rice. Not paella rice. Not egg fried rice. Just boiled rice, a bread roll and a banana.
- You can rent a sunbed for 10 euros which we did very comfortable. Please bring your own food as they only offer a small bread roll each with cheese and ham. Free soft drinks, beer and water during trip though.
- Far to many people on board not enough sun lounger and the ones on board you had to pay extra for but only if you were there early enough to bag one , food absolutely terrible considering the price paid per ticket
Freebird One is a unique catamaran, built in France and designed for comfort and a unique experience in whale and dolphin watching in Tenerife.Ā With its 28m length, it is the largest catamaran on the Canary Islands for sea excursions.
F13 is the new star of the fleet, a Tahiti 75 model catamaran, built by Fountaine Pajot, one of the best recreational boat builders in the world.Ā It has been recently refurbished to update its design and services on board.Ā The exclusive design and the elaborate boat line guarantee efficiency, combining comfort, stability, agility and great sensations.
F24 is a stylish catamaran, a modern Tahiti 75 model catamaran, built in 2008 by Fountaine Pajot, one of the best recreational boat builders in the world.Ā Navigation on the One4You is a pleasure since it is a comfortable and spacious catamaran. It is designed to offer splendid relaxation areas, with various solariums and rest spots.Ā With its 22 meters of length and 12 meters of width, the F24 One4You is equipped with a VIP zone in the prow with a capacity for 24 people, toilets, bar service, Hi-Fi stereo system, etc.

Reviews about Ocean Tours Catamaran Trips
For dolphin and whale watching, there is a place in the Canary Islands that is amongst the best in the world. Tenerife is home to the Teno-Rasca Marine Strip. Dolphins are most active in the morning and evening. They tend to be less active at night, especially if it’s cloudy or rainy out. Dolphins are here year round although many of them are migratory. They are most frequently seen in the warm months from May to October when the water is warmer.
Of course, there is no guarantee that you will see Dolphins but it’s rare not to see Whales on your trip. Whale-watching tours usually sail from Puerto Colón, Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes, or Los Cristianos.Ā

Great Properties from Our Group
One persons view says it all.
We prefer self catering to any other board basis. We like it because we can come and go as we please and we love to eat out in different restraints every night and not be confined to 1 place. We don’t like the idea of having to be back for a certain time for tea or whatever.
We went bed and breakfast in August and breakfast was served until 10 am which i thought was reasonable but there were a few mornings when we would have liked to stay in bed a bit longer and a couple of times we did. You can still stay in hotels or aparthotels on a self catering basis so you still get a balcony with the views etc.
We just tend to buy some things in for snacks and maybe have breakfast in so buy bread, beans, bacon etc milk, tea bags things like that.
There are many places offering self catering in Tenerife but why not cut out the middleman and go to owners direct?

El Hierro island is the smallest of the Canary Islands. Many believe El Hierro offers the best diving on the Canary Islands.
The diving conditions vary considerably in Tenerife all year round with water temperatures usually range from 18 Āŗ C to 25 Āŗ C and visibility of 5m to 35m. Diving in Costa Adeje is good all year.
The water temperature in summer is around 24°C and in the winter months it can drop to 18-19°C. There is no big change in the temperature between the surface and the depths.
Most morning divers are treated to ocean conditions without wind, waves, current, and visibility is also noticeably better earlier in the day. This means easier dives, lower air consumption, longer dives, and more to see!
The water temperature is mild in winter (maximum 3.2mm wetsuit required) and in the summer you can surf in boardshort or with a short wetsuit.

Whether purpose-sunk as an artificial reef for scuba divers, or lost as the result of an accident, wrecks are fascinating windows to the past. Ships, airplanes and even cars are fascinating to explore and usually teem with aquatic life. Each wreck dive offers a chance for discovery, potentially unlocking a mystery or spying something others have missed.
The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty course is popular because it offers rewarding adventures while observing responsible wreck diving practices.

MakeĀ sure you choose the right tour operator and the type of trip that’s right for you. Ocean Tours have a number of great options to see whales and dolphins. They also have an excellent reputation.
That’s an easy one. Tenerife has a great climate all year round, especially in the South so any time is good for seeing whales and Dolphins.
If you don’t see whales on your trip you are either extremely unlucky or you chose the wrong boat trip. It’s said that you will see whales 99% of the time. Of course you could be forgiven for thinking it’s all about the dolphins but that has more to do with marketing than anything else.
In truth you are more likely to see whales than dolphins but the chances are still pretty good, estimated at roughly 60%. Again, choose you trip carefully. Take a smaller boat and avoid the party cruises. Trust me there is nothing more annoying than peacefully watching dolphins swimming and jumping out of the water only to see them frightened off by a boat full of alcohol laden party-makers with loud music.
‘Fraid not. Strictly forbidden. Also bear in mind that if you are offered something privately on the cheap, you need to be very careful that they have all the proper licences in place. If you get caught out it’sĀ fines all round. In Tenerife it’s taken very seriously. And ‘I didn’t know’ won’t work!
If you want a close encounter with dolphins, there are water parks where you can do this. If you love the idea of interacting with Tenerifes marine life then snorkeling may be a good choice for you.
